Congressman Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, made headlines earlier this week when he tweeted in favor of the presidential candidate in the Netherlands, Geert Wilders.

The tweet included a link to a cartoon that showed Wilders attempting to plug a cracked wall with “Western civilization” written on it. Wilders is known for his far-right views in the Netherlands.

The tweet by King was captioned, “Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny,” and subsequently said, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

Despite immense backlash from the twitter community, the GOP congressman decided to double down when asked about the tweet on CNN.

Yesterday, when asked if he meant what he said, King stated: “Well, of course, I meant exactly what I said, as always is the case.”

He continued by saying maintaining culture was “not happening in any of the Western European countries.”

King’s comments appear to be in direct reference to the influx of immigrants that have come to the US and Western European countries. His anti-immigration rhetoric has not been received well by many politicians from both sides of the political spectrum.

Jeff Kaufmann, the former chairman of the Iowa Republican party, responded to questions about the tweet saying, “We are a nation of immigrants, and diversity is the strength of any nation and any community.”

Much like Kaufmann, Nancy Pelosi, echoed the same message except she was a lot more blunt.

“Republican Congressman Steve King’s vile racism has no place in decent society, much less in the US Congress,” Drew Hammill, her spokesman, said in a statement.

This comes at a time when the Dutch general election is right around the corner. On March 15th, the Dutch people will elect a new president.

Wilders is seen as the favorite despite his hardline stance on immigration. He has made comments like “make the Netherlands ours again” and referred to Moroccan immigrants as “scum”.

The leader of the Party of Freedom would later retract those comments and say, “Not all are scum, but there is a lot of Moroccan scum in Holland who makes the streets unsafe.”

Moreover, Mr. Wilders was convicted of inciting discrimination in 2014 when he led an anti-Moroccan chant at a political rally and has called for a total shutdown of Muslim immigration and mosques if he is elected as prime minister of the Netherlands.
